So my comments during this discussion where how the new features being added to office platforms can be used to assist with some of the problems being highlighted. My examples were:
1) Vitualisation: which can be used to provide both a backwards compatible environment for those components which can only use old operating systems and isolation of certain critical environments
2) Trusted Platform Module: the addition of the TPM as a standard feature in modern platforms will transform how security of the plaform will work in the future.
Finally on the point of 3G systems only having back up fro 10 mins and I enquired whether 3G systems implemented ACCLOC - a system of prioritising which handsets (based on a value set in the SIM card) have access to the base station.

So the thing that occurred to me here is how similar the automotive industry is to the PC manufacturing business. This is especially true where you consider different suppliers of components need software to run on the system, and the OEM also wants their own software to run without intference from the OS manufacturers.
Addtionally has anyone looked at the use of Planguage as this mechanism provides for the specification of both functional and non-functional requirements.
